Rotoscoping Study | 349 Frame Human Subject – Nuke

A roto exercise completed in Nuke focusing on a 349-frame shot of a seated character filmed from behind on a park bench.

The shot involved separating multiple interacting elements including the subject’s limbs, torso, head, and the static bench environment. The roto was structured using multiple shape hierarchies with attention to maintaining clean silhouette transitions and consistent motion across the full duration of the shot.

A key focus of this exercise was managing subtle organic motion over a long frame range, particularly around areas of overlap such as the arms against the torso and the head against a bright sky background. This introduced edge challenges caused by strong backlight and natural light wrap, which required careful judgement to distinguish between true silhouette changes and optical edge behaviour.

The goal throughout was to maintain stable, production-usable mattes with clean interpolation and efficient keyframing rather than relying on frame-by-frame tracing.
